Vibrator

BY: DAVID PERRY

Still waiting for a U.S. distribution deal, Ryuichi Hiroki’s Vibrator is one of the most insightful films of the year because it tries to say nothing more than the sections its characters’ lives for the moment. There’s no great overriding back-story, hopefully predictions, or spotty contrivances to bog down the short and simple film about two people finding immense pleasure in each other’s company.

Filled with narrative intertitles that create more character development than many films do, this vibrant little film couldn’t be closer to perfect in its layout. A young bulimic decides to run off with a truck driver with no other purpose but to learn about each other. The complexity of this attempt at humanistic nirvana is placed on a plane of long drives and cold locales. The insular quality of the camerawork faultlessly melds with the outward performances. My only disappointment is that it’s only access is through minor film festivals
